Bandung, February 23, 2023 – SBM-ITB Bandung held a public lecture on Energy, Governance, and Sustainability with Prof. Ian Rowlands from the Faculty of Environment, University of Waterloo as the speaker on Friday, February 17, 2023. The lecture attracted a large number of participants, mostly MBA students. Professor Rowlands’ visit to Indonesia is also part of his role as Associate Vice-President (International) to discuss collaboration between ITB and the University of Waterloo.
During the lecture, Prof. Rowlands emphasized the importance of energy transition in achieving sustainability in the future. He also discussed the role of businesses in promoting energy sustainability and green energy.
Furthermore, Prof. Rowlands talked about the challenges of energy transition and the need for effective management of energy facilities to avoid protests or rejection. He also emphasized the importance of consumers becoming energy producers to create arbitrage in energy and facilitate energy transition.
In relation to SDG7, which aims to ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy for all. This includes the potential for businesses to become both consumers and producers of renewable energy, contributing to a more sustainable energy system. So the international collaboration in technology transfer and knowledge sharing to advance energy sustainability efforts globally will be important.
Prof. Rowlands also highlighted the significance of international cooperation in technology transfer, knowledge sharing, and training. According to Professor Rowlands, “Sustainable energy transition is one of the biggest challenges of our time, and it is vital to manage the storage and creation of new energy facilities effectively.” He also believes that international cooperation is crucial to transfer technology, knowledge, and training between nations.
With international cooperation between today’s governments, organizations, and businesses, people around the world could contribute to implementing the concept of Energy, Governance and Sustainability. This is due to maintaining the balance of the environment and the sustainability of human life in the future.
Moreover, he said that these energy transitions were good and bad, but the impact of that energy should be considered. He mentioned that increasing energy consumption could be a function of a prospering society, but its negative consequences can be significant if it is generated through conventional fossil-based ways.
The guest lecture aims to provide insight into the intersection of energy, governance and sustainability issues and the role of business in promoting and switching to sustainable energy and green energy. In conclusion, the public lecture provided valuable insights into the importance of energy transition and the role of businesses in achieving sustainability. It was an excellent opportunity for the MBA students to learn from an expert in the field and gain knowledge that they can apply in their future careers.
SBM ITB regularly invites guest lecturers from reputable international academic experts and practitioners from various companies. This program is to support sustainable business and encourage students and alumni to have business initiatives that are environmentally friendly and have an impact on society.
This program was also attended by the class coordinator of the business ethics course Andika Putra Pratama. PhD who is also the Head of International Relations (Bureau of Partnerships) ITB and Dr. Nurlaela Arief as team teaching for sustainability.
